Bierstadt biographers Nancy K. Anderson and Linda S. Ferber wrote, “After more than two years in California, Bierstadt and his wife departed San Francisco early in October 1873. In a remarkable display of stamina and energy, he had spent his time on the Pacific Coast in a nearly constant state of motion. The sketches he had gathered on his travels served as the raw material for a steady stream of paintings that began to appear even before he left California.”
