2016 Coeur d’Alene Art Auction / Lot 42
It is a little known fact that banking giant Wells Fargo actually began life as an express courier. Their main source of income was payroll and U.S. Postal delivery contracts. Huge sums of cash and gold being transported by coach over vast, sparsely populated distances, persuaded a few inspired entrepreneurs to start a new industry of their own. Some of these upstarts were quite colorful in their craft. Charles Boles, for instance, robbed the coaches under the alias ‘Black Bart.’ He even penned poetry and published it in the news media of the day.
I’ve labored long and hard for bread
For honor and for riches
But on my corns too long you’ve tread
You fine haired sons of bitches
BLACK BART (Charles Boles)
