“This is no infrequent episode during a hunting trip into the mountains. When the snow zone is reached and the snow becomes increasingly deep as one ascends, the footing becomes more precarious. The pack horse is unwieldy due to his load, but when he falls he is protected by it. In the position shown, the animal cannot live longer than twenty minutes, since the weight of his intestines on his lungs will smother him; hence the haste on the part of the hunters is imperative.” Unpublished Memoirs
