The artist writes, “One spring night on a trail ride at the Zapata Ranch in Colorado, I was walking and shooting the breeze with a few other members of our outfit when a shadow cast from the full moon caught my attention. I looked up at a weathered old cottonwood reaching for the sky in a way that spoke to me of a lonesome century of determined defiance of wind, drought, and time. Right then, I said I would capture that lonesome sight in paint someday, and I did, though I gave that old warrior a friend and some music to help pass the rest of his time. I think they make a handsome pair.”
