The artist writes, “Stories abound from the mid to late 1800s of grizzly bears being a significant threat to settlers and frontiersmen, not only to their lives, but to their livelihoods as well. As expansion westward continued, cattle and sheep ranching spread across North America, leading to intense, often ruthless encounters with the indomitable predator. For many years, one such ornery bear named ‘Reelfoot,’ who left a two-toed track, had terrorized the ranchers of Siskiyou County, California. Reelfoot possessed a remarkable cunning in eluding all his pursuers and avoiding the dangers of the many traps set for him. He would seldom return to a kill after he had eaten, and he took a beef for every meal. By keeping well concealed in the daytime and traveling at a rate almost impossible for a man or horse to keep up with, the bear for many years baffled the efforts of the best hunters. Until the dawn of a new day on April 10, 1890, William A. Wright and Purl R. Bean set out on a bear hunt that resulted in the death of the much-feared grizzly, Reelfoot, and secured a place in the pages of history and in stories told far and near for years to come.”
