The artist writes, “Although attacks on stagecoaches in the Southwest were relatively rare, the threat was always there for those traveling lonely desert roads far from the protection of a town, fort, or settlement. In this painting, I wanted to capture the sudden chaos and desperation of such a moment – the pounding horses, flying dust, gunfire, and the realization that help was many miles away.
“Action scenes like this are always challenging for me to paint because there are so many moving parts to consider, but imagining what it might have felt like to be there made this one especially enjoyable to work on.”
