Assessing Ufer’s career, art historian Thomas Brent Smith observed, “Beginning with his first visit to New Mexico in 1914, gaining momentum in 1916 that lasted until around 1923, Ufer created a body of work that upon review stands as a testament to his talents and genius. The artist’s most important works came in the decade following the famed Armory Show of 1913, which introduced American audiences to international modern art movements for the first time. Just as America evolved from the Victorian era to a decidedly industrial one, American artists struggled to reconcile academic traditions and modern art movements. In one of America’s most isolated regions, where industrialization was minimized yet simultaneously strikingly apparent, Ufer met many of the same challenges as his contemporaries in urban areas. It is within this shift, both artistic and societal, that the mercurial Ufer found his muse in the small southwestern village of Taos.”
