Tasunka Kokipapi was a prominent Oglala Lakota leader who participated in Red Cloud’s War, later serving as a negotiator for the Sioux Nation following the Wounded Knee Massacre and as a member of delegations to Washington, D.C. His name is properly translated as They Fear Even His Horses, signifying a warrior so formidable that even the sight of his horse inspired fear. American sources during and after his lifetime mistranslated his name as Young Man Afraid of His Horses.
