Discussing one of Africa’s most iconic species, the artist wrote, “Among the many species of antelope, the sable has as many boosters for the title ‘number one’ as does the greater kudu. In addition to their regal bearing and imposing sweep of horns, the bulls can be very tough customers. More than one lion has paid the ultimate price while attempting to pull down an unwilling sable.
“In this painting, my use of the dead tree echoing the general shape of the sable’s crescent adornment is pretty obvious. It is a design device that is useful, but can be overdone.”
