Recalling time spent in the African wilderness, the artist wrote about this painting, “A recurring memory of my visits to semi-desert areas of southern Africa is the pervasive greyness. The gemsbok, biggest and handsomest of the oryx, is perfectly suited to survival in this hostile land. It can exist for long periods without water. This color scheme is not especially difficult, given the forgiving nature of grey. The principal function of the background is to convey a featureless landscape that harbors some pretty gaudy residents.”
