An original handwritten letter from the artist to Fausto Yturria, Jr. discussing the painting will accompany the lot.
Highlighting the breadth of Kuhn’s vision of Africa, biographer Tom Davis wrote, “For many, Kuhn’s paintings are Africa. They sharpen the appreciation of those who have been there, and they define the place for those who have not. Numerous artists have attempted to evoke the African mood; most have failed because while they paint what they see, they do not fully understand it. Their work lacks spark and spontaneity; their vision is without power. They dwell on the superficial, rather than laying bare its essence. Kuhn succeeds because his spirit is tuned to the pitch of Africa. The harmonics of the man and the land have identical frequency.”
The artist, in discussing dramatic scenes within his work, wrote, “Predator-prey situations make for exciting paintings, if you can get the mechanics right. Even with a wealth of material to draw on, both movies and still photography, a lot remains to be worked out. There is a fairly large percentage of failures to contend with, but when one works, the pain of the near-misses tends to fade.”
