Considering his craft, the artist wrote, “Animal painting is a special calling. If one is addicted to it, he is likely to die with the addiction. In any generation, a handful of those involved in putting brush to board devote themselves to this specialty. The animal painter of today is both helped and challenged by the advent of photography. Helped because he has access to a vast library of movies and stills depicting wildlife in a limitless variety of attitudes and circumstances. Challenged because he must go beyond the purely visual image so amply covered by the photographer to interpret his subject matter in new and more personal ways. Yet he cannot make his interpretation so private that only he is moved by it. It is in the blending of a clear eye, a solid foundation of knowledge and a discernible love for his subjects that the animal painter can still make a valid comment on the creatures which roam the earth during this twilight of the age of mammals.”
