According to Russell authority Dr. Brian W. Dippie, “Those familiar with Charlie Russell’s work know he was fascinated by buffalo. Scores of paintings, drawings, models, and sculptures of herds on the move, buffalo hunts, and solitary bulls – as well as the buffalo skull that formed part of his signature – testify to a love affair with ‘nature’s cattle.’ By 1908 the buffalo’s glory days were long over, and Russell paid doleful tribute in a verse written for Frank Bird Linderman, a close student of Montana history and a friend of the Indian who would become Russell’s close friend as well.”
