Considering the behavior and form of feline subjects, the artist wrote: “Most of the time, cats of all sizes are at rest. They aren’t necessarily asleep, just flaked out, maybe grooming themselves, maybe lost in thought (about what, I wonder) or just looking with keen, unflinching eyes, out into the country surrounding their retreat.”

“I have painted cheetahs a number of times, with varying success. They are efficiently designed animals but so strangely proportioned that to paint one broadside is to court disbelief. I find them most interesting and paintable when they are flaked out, in broken light, still spare of body and leggy but full of grace.”
