Pushing Ahead – Washington 1753 captures a formative moment in George Washington’s early life, reflecting the grit and determination that would later define his leadership during the American Revolution and his presidency.
In 1753, at the age of 21, Washington was sent by Virginia Governor Robert Dinwiddie on a diplomatic and reconnaissance mission to deliver a warning to French forces encroaching on British-claimed territory in the Ohio Valley. Navigating harsh winter terrain and facing encounters with both Native Americans and French forces, Washington gathered detailed intelligence that would later ignite the French and Indian War. His route later determined the boundary between British colonies and French Canada – and eventually, the Canada–United States border.
The sculpture depicts Washington’s perseverance, leadership, and courage during this mission. Borglum’s title, Pushing Ahead – Washington 1753, evokes a sense of determination, fitting with the theme of Washington leading an expedition through the untamed frontier, braving both natural and political challenges. Known for his dynamic, action-driven compositions, Borglum emphasized the physical and psychological toughness the mission demanded, portraying Washington not just as a future statesman, but as a young and determined figure on the cusp of a military career.
