The artist wrote, “A good friend, Peter Jenkins, was the warden at Meru Park in Kenya for several years. Not far from his residence, near headquarters, a spring arose from the rocky soil and ran as a clear, fast stream for quite a stretch. Along its banks grew a belt of bright, green grass. The outer edge of the grassy strip was so regular that it looked like a man-made stretch of lawn in a semi-arid volcanic landscape. It was favored by buffalo, which had both water and succulent greenery in a confined area, all theirs for the taking.”
