Describing this painting the artist wrote, “The Bloods are one of the three Blackfeet bands who have long made their homes along the Montana-Canada border, the others being the Piegan and the Siksika, or Blackfeet proper. Though they lived apart, they spoke the same language, had most of the same rituals and customs, and allied against their common enemies in time of war. The tribal name is of Cree origin, though the reason for calling them Blackfeet has been lost to the centuries. The origin of the Blood name is also obscure. One theory is that it came from their painting faces and robes with red earth.”
