The artist writes, “I was inspired to paint this picture because it was a scene that greeted me most mornings when looking out of my tent pitched next to the Mara River in Kenya. Hippos are animals that are full of character and can sometimes look quite comical and ungainly when out of water but change the instant they are in the water, becoming almost graceful in their movements. They are also among the most dangerous animals in Africa as I almost found while canoeing down the Zambezi river in Zambia... but that is another story!”
