Conrad Buff was born in Switzerland and followed his father’s interest in the art of painting. In 1903, he immigrated to America and took on varied jobs to survive, eventually making his way to California where he began painting landscapes. Studying at the Art Students League, he developed a somewhat abstract style that differed from conventional landscape painters of his day. During the 1920s and into the next decade, Buff created large murals for the Southern California Edison Company, the First National Bank of Phoenix, the William Penn Hotel in Whittier and others. In 1936 he married writer Mary Marsh and the two published 14 books, all illustrated by Buff. He died in Laguna Hills in 1975.
