Discussing this painting the artist wrote, “I painted both of the lions first, using values that would suit their positions in the painting. Then I blocked in the egrets. Once the paint dried, I laid in the dusty background color and dragged it over the lions. Then I drybrushed some of the background color over the lions to soften the edges. I painted the foreground and gave the egrets more detail, although I softened the edges of their wings. Finally, I added highlights to the lions and birds. Not only does this painting provide an extreme example of receding values and hues, I exaggerated this effect by applying plenty of detail in the foreground and practically none in the background. This gives the impression of greater depth and distance, which adds to the lion’s speed.”
