Copies of both the Penwell note and Dyck description will accompany the lot.

Diana Reynolds Penwell states in a note that her parents received this painting as a wedding gift from Sharp. Her grandfather was S.G. Reynolds, the Crow Indian Agent during the time Sharp lived at Crow Agency. The two men were lifetime friends.

According to artist and Plains Indian authority Paul Dyck, “Every [Crow] camp during the Buffalo Culture era had an all-red tipi near the center of the camp circle. This custom was followed only during the major gatherings of the Tribe throughout the year. This lodge was to give food and comfort to all visitors in need, even their enemies who were feasted inside the Red Tipi.

“Joseph H. Sharp could have seen the last Red Tipi of the Crow Tribe in the 1910-1920 era which belonged to the Spotted Jackrabbit family.”
