2015 Coeur d’Alene Art Auction / Lot 275
A copy of the artist’s written description of the painting will accompany the lot.
The artist wrote, “In 1865, after the Sand Creek Massacre and various treaty violations, the Cheyennes were actively raiding along the Platte River with much success, defeating the U.S. cavalry at every turn. Their operations included temporarily closing down the stage line. In this drawing (later a painting) an abandoned relay station has been looted and set fire. In the process many strange and wonderful things were liberated and molasses tested for the first time.”
