Discussing this painting Bob Kuhn wrote, “A few years back, a friend commissioned me to paint a big bull moose in a typical Alaskan setting. I worked up a couple of pencil sketches: one showed several animals in a closed-in setting; the other had them on a sidehill with lots of Alaska as a backdrop. My friend opted for the more scenic one. I never betray a preference in such a decision-making process, since I’m not the one who will be living with the painting. If you were to ask me now to choose between the two, you’d still get a very noncommittal answer. I may not be smart, but I am cowardly.”
