According to Dr. Larry Len Peterson, “Entering a contest held by P. F. Collier and Son, Goodwin submitted Hiawatha and the Pearl Feather. His large oil won first prize and was used as the frontispiece for a volume of American Poetry by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and William Cullen Bryant.”
