Reflecting on the scene depicted, the artist wrote, “This is a scenic painting of the Northwest with the three trappers and their pack horses as part of the landscape. They are pausing at the edge of a river, deciding where to cross. The logs in the foreground were deposited by spring runoff when the water was high, and grass has grown up around them.”
