Discussing the background behind this painting, the artist wrote, “[This is one of the] four brothers that I photographed at Crow Fair, which is one of the largest Indian powwows in the country during the summer. They were called the Norsk brothers. They were all dressed differently. I asked if there was any significance in the war paint they wore on their faces, and they said no, they just did it arbitrarily.”
