Paul Pletka (b. 1946)
General Custer
acrylic on canvas
60 × 48 inches
signed lower left

According to Pletka biographer Evan Maurer, “Paul Pletka paints in the tradition of inspired realism. His fascination with real life artifacts, mainly from the Native American and Hispanic cultures of the West, has directed him to use these sources as the basis of a personal narrative that creates illusions of history. In his meticulous paintings there is an animated fantasy that is backed up by fact. The primary inspiration for a work comes from his initial, deep satisfaction with the objects of material culture. Pletka seriously studies the history of the West – its legends, artifacts, events, and characters. And from this research he develops a sense of fact that is embellished with personal interpretation to create these paintings of a shocking kind of realism.”
