The artist wrote, “We expect to return to Taos late Apr-early May and be greeted by the robins, blue birds and flowers. That old wall, gate and magnificent cottonwood tree, the foliage reaching across the narrow road to our wall, the U.S. Govt took all out to make the old Kit Carson road (Santa Fe Trail) 4 ft. wider & straighter – that no one wanted. It is Kit Carson st now! Commercialized progress. About the last old time village we have. I’m not in habit of kicking out loud much – Just grunt disgust like Duveneck.”
