VERSO
Label, Arts Ltd., Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Discussing this painting, the artist wrote: “The conformation of the ever-present acacias, the dominant tree in much of East Africa’s open woodland, is so convoluted that the opportunity for complex patterns is limitless. The artist’s job is to sort through this embarrassment of riches to find the shapes he wants. Wildebeest are acutely aware of their eternal tormentor, Simba, but are not especially concerned since the cat’s demeanor is not threatening. Further, they know the distance that separates them from the lion is adequate, should retreat be necessary. Their relationship, though marked by moments of extreme stress, is based on a measure of guarded acceptance.”
