Describing this painting, the artist wrote: “The 18th century explorer, Juan de Anza, Father Garcés and a group of Spanish soldiers confront the Yuma Indians along the lower Colorado River. This strategic expedition was organized to establish a new mission in California and to maintain the hold of conquest for Spain.”
