Riley biographer Susan Hallsten McGarry wrote, “Like Lewis and Clark, Kenneth Riley was also an explorer, delving into the history of the western frontier through the journals of Lewis and Clark.

“As he read the journals, Riley was excited by the Mandan Indians, who hosted the Corps of Discovery during the fall and winter of 1804-05. Fort Mandan, which was built across the river from the Mandan village at a site in present-day North Dakota, was named in honor of the tribe that was largely responsible for the Corps survival that winter.”

The artist wrote, “Journals are especially inspirational since they are not watered-down through successive interpretation. It’s almost as if you are experiencing the event as it happens.”
