Describing this painting the artist writes, “Buffalo Calf Road Woman, a Northern Cheyenne, lived in the latter half of the 19th century. Her life was filled with many challenges and difficulties as she lived during a time when indigenous people were being forced to move to reservations. As her family and way of life were being threatened, she bravely fought alongside her husband while also raising their children. She was given the name Brave Woman after courageously saving her brother during the Battle of the Rosebud. She was well known for carrying her six-shooter with her wherever she went. Along with her pistol, she would carry her baby strapped to her back on a cradleboard. She was always ready to protect her family, her traditions, and her way of life.”
