Couse historian Virginia Couse Leavitt wrote, “Couse’s model here was Jerry Mirabel. Beaded moccasins were made by the Plains Indians and traded at Taos, the northernmost Pueblo in New Mexico. Taos was a major commerce center with the tribes to the east, indicated here by the moccasins, and with other pueblos to the south, seen here by the pot to the right. Couse collected Indian costume and artifacts to use in his work and those seen in this picture are from his private collection. This painting is a perfect example of Couse’s admiration of the Indian as artist.”
