Label, Coeur d’Alene Galleries, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho

A limited edition leather-bound copy of Frank Stick: Splendid Painter of the Out-of-Doors by Michael F. Mordell will accompany the lot.

Stick biographer Michael F. Mordell wrote, “This painting was most likely painted in the Stick’s Squirrel Lake cabin. It depicts four riders at the edge of Lake McDermott (now Swift Current Lake) in Glacier National Park, Montana. A Blackfoot Indian effortlessly paddles his canoe across the tranquil water. The man seated on the horse to the left, with his arm outstretched, is Frank Stick. The woman to his right looking through the binoculars is Maud. The other two men are unidentified, but the man on the far right, mounting his horse, bears a resemblance to Charles M. Russell the famous artist. Russell had a studio nearby on Lake McDonald. This is one of Stick’s largest oils and undoubtedly commemorates their visit to the area the year prior.”
