Sacagawea, or Bird Woman as her Lemhi Shoshone name translates, helped the Lewis and Clark Expedition succeed in their mission of exploring the Louisiana Territory. In the early 1900s, the National American Woman Suffrage Association adopted Sacagawea as a symbol of women’s worth and independence by creating statutes and plaques in her memory.
