According the to artist, “When the Spanish conquistadors came to central Mexico in the 1500s, the Tarahumara escaped their control by fleeing to the nearly inaccessible canyons. For centuries they have lived a secluded existence. Today, despite some contact with the outside world, their culture is still strong and continues to survive. Here, a Tarahumara woman sits beneath an ancient tree more than a mile above her home in the Copper Canyon. She mends and puts final touches on items she will sell the following day.”
