The artist writes, “In the Blackfeet culture, it was believed that Mother Nature had supreme power over everything in the world that affected their daily lives - including all animals, storms, the wind, snow, and water. For every important event that they were about to undertake, the Blackfeet looked to Mother Nature for assurance that they would meet with success. In this scene, the braves, who were about to go into battle with an enemy, are taking part in a ritual with a medicine man. During this pre-battle ceremony, he is Beseeching the Underwater People to look over these warriors and allow them to return safely from battle.”
