Paxson’s great-grandson William Edgar Paxson, Jr. wrote, “For many years Edgar and his friends hunted in the region of the Three Forks of the Missouri where nearly all the major Indian trails in the region converged. Not long before, the Blackfeet passed there on their raids against the Shoshones, Bannocks and Crows. The Shoshones passed back and forth on their annual hunt on the Yellowstone and Snake River plains. The Flatheads and Nez Perce came there, too, to hunt. Even the Piegans and Gros Ventres from far to the north came to that favored spot... During Edgar’s hunts, small bands still passed through the area, and Edgar visited them in their camps. This is the country so often portrayed in his paintings.”
