A print identifying the men in the center of the painting will accompany the lot.

The artist writes, “It surprises me that a significant event like the celebration of the completion of the transcontinental railroad yielded no photos of the moment when the last spike was driven. Fortunately there is great amount of descriptive record for the event. Golden Spike Ceremony is one of the most complex scenes I have ever painted, and it was a challenge for me to have all the main characters included in the composition. According to historian J. N. Bowman, ‘The driving home of the spike was done by general superintendents Strobridge and Reed,’ so I painted Strobridge performing the job.”
