Sioux Chief Little Crow was effective in negotiating the treaties of Traverse des Sioux and Mendota. In exchange for supplies and annual payments he agreed to move his people to a reservation but when the federal government failed to deliver on its promises, Little Crow led his starving warriors in the failed Dakota War of 1862. He was killed the following year.
