In a letter to Millard Sheets, an art professor at Scripps College, Dixon wrote, “But long ago—about 1915, when ‘modern art’ first ‘bit the USA’—I had to make a hard decision. Should I go along with the ‘new movement,’ adopt a novel and fashionable point of view, get my ideas ‘imported’—or should I look at my world with more candid eyes, be plainly honest with myself and so achieve something perhaps not startling but at least sincere.
“As often before, I went again into the desert to find an answer—and it was not far to seek ... Well—there is the empty desert; there are the arid mountains; they shimmer in the ashen heat of noon, or swim in the far elusive color of evening—a reality that appears unreal, challenging the imagination.”
