VERSO
Titled

Donna Poulton and Vern G. Swanson wrote “Famous for his landscapes and mountain scenes set in the High Sierra of California, Payne was also attracted to the desert. The Paynes’ first adventure to the desert Southwest was in 1916. As the patron of so many Southwest artists of the time, the Santa Fe Railroad paid their expenses and fares to such destinations as Canyon de Chelly and the Grand Canyon.

“In the ensuing years, Edgar Payne returned to the Navajo country of northern Arizona and southern Utah repeatedly painting portraits of the Navajo people.”
