The artist writes, “The Four Chiefs depicts Oglala Sioux chiefs at Fort Laramie in 1868. They were attending treaty negotiations with the U.S. Government. Fort Laramie was a significant trading post and diplomatic site located at the confluence of the Laramie and North Platte Rivers in eastern Wyoming. The background of the painting is antiqued gold leaf.”
