In Charles M. Russell: Watercolors 1887-1926, Rick Stewart wrote, “Russell developed his art during a decade when the mythical image of the American cowboy was established and already honed to perfection. The subject of the cowboy and his work appeared frequently in the national press throughout the period. ‘Most people know of the cowboy through reading yellow-backed novels,’ one writer remarked in 1883 before going on to describe how difficult it was to be one. Real cowboys had to be able to ‘ride like centaurs’ and throw the lariat with ‘unerring skill’ in order to survive. Moreover, their life was ‘singularly barren of all but the barest creature comforts,’ and there was not much of a future in it, for few of them worked for more than half out of every year. ‘He can not always ride after cattle, and he is hardly likely save much for his old age,’ a writer for Harper’s Weekly noted in 1880.”
