Indian is recorded in the C. M. Russell Catalogue Raisonné as reference number CR.NE.818.

An original Russell letter to Mrs. Knowles will accompany the lot.

The Knowles family ran the Chico Hot Springs Spa in Montana in the early 1900s. This painting and the letter were given to Charles Hodges in the 1980s by Agnes Knowles Leak, who was R.C. Knowles’ wife. Agnes’ second husband, Edgar Leak and Charles Hodges became friends in the 1960s when both were members of the same Masonic lodge.
