The artist writes, “The North American fur trade and the pursuit of beaver pelts for the use in making felt hats flourished from around 1800 through 1850. But fashion is fickle. European demand for the latest style silk hat soared causing the market for beaver-felt hats to plummet. Trappers of the fur trade were forced to find other means of income. For some, an easy transition was found—guiding settlers. The trappers and mountain men knew virtually all the trails, streams and passes. Their knowledge and skills were in high demand by those entering the new frontier.”
