2017 Coeur d’Alene Art Auction / Lot 180
According to the Glenbow Museum in Carl Rungius Artist & Sportsman, “The spectacular mountains and wildlife of North America’s West were a focus for the life and art of Carl Rungius for almost 60 years. This was his habitat and like the animals he painted and hunted, he was unconcerned about political borders. This was where Rungius felt at home. Rungius depicted Bow Lake, Lake O’Hara, Lake McArthur and Mount Assiniboine in his paintings. The Brazeau, Ram and Clearwater River areas east of Jasper, Alberta, were some of Rungius’ favourite hunting grounds. While in Wyoming, Rungius was based in Cora, and during his various visits would travel by horse into the surrounding region, including the Green River and Grand Teton areas. Rungius knew he experienced this land and the wildlife as few others could. He expected that the wildlife would disappear with time, and so considered it his ‘mission’ to capture the big game and the West as it was in his art.”
