The artist writes, “In the early 1800’s the Rocky Mountain fur trade began in earnest. Trapping expeditions typically consisted of 30 to 40 men in pursuit of beaver pelts. The wilds of the prairies and mountains offered an assortment of hazards: grizzly bears, mountain lions, rattle snakes, unfriendly Indians and the ever present threat of catastrophic weather. In this painting, a violent storm has arrived and the stock has stampeded. In quick pursuit, these mountain men hasten to recover the herd.”
