According to the artist, “Quite typical of the quail coveys found in many parts of the South, this particular picture is a composite of some of the places Richard Lea showed me around the Thomasville area in Georgia, which he calls the quail capital of the world.

“One problem, there are so many vertical lines in this kind of setting that I sought out a divide, such as the fallen tree, to put some diagonal movement into the composition. The dogs’ tails and birds’ flight paths also help.

“To a Northerner (and a Yankee at that), the woods and terrain are quite unique, but as almost anywhere the low rays of the late afternoon sunlight play their usual magic.”

The Outdoor Paintings of Robert K. Abbett will accompany the lot.
