Discussing this painting Don Hedgpeth wrote, “It is difficult to think about Indians in the American West without considering them together with their horses. They were a people of horses in their heyday, and their lives were centered on horses as surely as on buffalo. The Indian and his horse had become like brothers, and they knew one another’s hearts. There was a strong, unbreakable bond between Indians and horses. The Indian looked into the eyes of a horse and knew what most white men did not: that the horse had a spirit, too.”
